Speaker:

Hello and welcome to Women in

the Coaching Arena podcast.

2

:

I'm so glad you are here.

3

:

I'm Jo Lott, a business mentor

and ICF accredited coach

4

:

Microphone (Samson Q2U Microphone):

and I help coaches to

5

:

build brilliant businesses.

6

:

I know that when you prepare to enter

the arena, there is fear, self doubt,

7

:

comparison, anxiety, uncertainty.

8

:

You can tend to armor up and

protect yourself from vulnerability.

9

:

In this podcast, I'll be sharing

honest, not hype, practical and

10

:

emotional tools to support you to make

the difference that you are here for.

11

:

Dare greatly.

12

:

You belong in this arena.

13

:

Joanna: Welcome to Women

in the Coaching Arena.

14

:

I am so glad you are here.

15

:

Today I'm really excited

to have Jess here.

16

:

Jess messaged me saying that she is

intending to join the business of

17

:

coaching after she's finished her

ILM level 7 in executive coaching.

18

:

And would I like to share the

perspective of someone who is

19

:

considering making that investment?

20

:

And I know that so many of you are in

that place where you've just invested a

21

:

lot of money in your coach training and

you're wondering whether to do this alone

22

:

or whether to get help in that next step.

23

:

So super excited to chat with

Jess today and hear her thoughts.

24

:

I'm as interested as you are

in what she needs help in.

25

:

Why she's looking to invest in the

business side of things as well as

26

:

obviously investing in the coaching

side of things which she has done.

27

:

So cannot wait to chat.

28

:

Please do share with us a bit about

your journey in coaching so far.

29

:

Jess: Hi Jo, thank you for

having me on the podcast.

30

:

. So most of my career has

been in digital content.

31

:

When I was 39, I had some

coaching through my work.

32

:

And as part of that, my coach said to

me, I think you'd make a good coach.

33

:

And it completely took me by surprise

because I don't think it ever would have

34

:

crossed my mind to even consider that as

a career path if she hadn't said that.

35

:

So that sowed the seed for me

and I just found that coaching

36

:

would be an amazing fit for me.

37

:

And I took the plunge and signed

up to do my ILM level seven, senior

38

:

and executive coaching diploma.

39

:

I'm coming to the end of that

now . And I'm starting to think

40

:

about the business side of things,

which led me to send you that email.

41

:

Joanna: Yay!

42

:

So excited to learn more and I did the

ILM level seven in executive coaching too.

43

:

So share your experience of

that qualification so far.

44

:

Jess: I mean, it sounds

a bit cliche, doesn't it?

45

:

But it genuinely has been

life changing for me.

46

:

I don't think I've ever worked

as hard at anything in my life,

47

:

other than raising two children.

48

:

It's been very demanding, very

challenging, but honestly, one of

49

:

the best things I've ever done.

50

:

I trained with In Good Company,

a shout out to them there.

51

:

I really couldn't

recommend them more highly.

52

:

Joanna: Yay, love it.

53

:

Yeah, it's such a personal growth

journey training as a coach, isn't it?

54

:

Let alone the skills that

you can use on others.

55

:

So totally, I hear you.

56

:

And as someone now on the cusp of

being qualified, what are your biggest

57

:

concerns when it comes to starting

and growing your coaching business?

58

:

Jess: That's a very good question

because I think probably anyone

59

:

starting out on setting up their

own business, whatever field it's

60

:

in has about a billion concerns.

61

:

For me, it's getting those clients in.

62

:

You do your course, you do your practice

hours, and of course it's much easier to

63

:

get free clients than it is pay clients.

64

:

For me, It's, what I need to do to create

that steady pipeline, because it's just

65

:

so different to being in an employed role.

66

:

if you've not done that before,

it's just a whole different

67

:

mindset you need to be in.

68

:

So it's the getting the

consistent pipeline of clients.

69

:

It's also for me, because I'm,

I'm pretty early on in my journey.

70

:

I haven't defined my package as such.

71

:

So at the moment I'm selling six coaching

sessions, but I know that the messaging

72

:

around that can be a lot more compelling

about what people can get out of it.

73

:

But it's the messaging as well, I

think, and how you position yourself.

74

:

And there's just so

much to it, isn't there?

75

:

And when you're new to it, it

can feel quite overwhelming.

76

:

Joanna: Yeah, totally.

77

:

And it's not just even the basics anymore.

78

:

Just like coaching.

79

:

How can you continue to get

better and better at this skill?

80

:

So yes, very excited you're considering

it, especially so early in your journey,

81

:

because I think most people struggle

for a good year to two years sometimes

82

:

before getting the help that they need.

83

:

So what has led you to considering

working with a business coach

84

:

at this stage in your journey?

85

:

Jess: So the reason for me is the

business and the marketing and

86

:

the sales and all of that stuff.

87

:

And I'm a very impatient person as

well, so I didn't want to wait around.

88

:

I wanted to hit the ground running, and

I'm trying a few things out myself now.

89

:

I'm seeing what works

well and what doesn't.

90

:

I've started to experiment.

91

:

I'm doing a special offer at the moment.

92

:

And it's actually quite fun experimenting

with things, but I think I definitely

93

:

would benefit from the experience of

someone who's been there and done that.

94

:

And yeah, that's what's led

me to you and your program.

95

:

Joanna: Yeah, totally love it.

96

:

And the hidden benefit of doing something

when you are feeling excited and motivated

97

:

is that you haven't lost that confidence

that often people have lost by the time

98

:

they've been kind of going around on their

own without support and then takes quite

99

:

a long time to build people up again.

100

:

How did you find me and the

business of coaching and what

101

:

attracted you to the program?

102

:

Jess: I'm a massive podcast fan and

I was searching for coaching podcasts

103

:

to add to my collection and yours

came up, and it was a bit different

104

:

to the other ones I'd listened to.

105

:

What I really like about your approach

is that you're very authentic,

106

:

although that is quite an overused word

these days, you are very authentic.

107

:

And, I believe what you say, you know,

you get a lot of those, make six figures

108

:

in three months and that kind of thing.

109

:

So going back to talking about the

messaging, the messaging you put in

110

:

your LinkedIn posts and on your podcast,

it's almost like I've said it myself,

111

:

if that makes sense and I work really

well in that sort of environment.

112

:

Joanna: Oh, love it.

113

:

Yeah.

114

:

I assumed you found me on LinkedIn.

115

:

So great to know that people

actually do just search for coaching

116

:

in podcasts and find the podcast.

117

:

And you touched on it there, but why

me and not another business coach?

118

:

Jess: Yeah.

119

:

It definitely, for me, comes back

to that authenticity piece and the

120

:

trust that comes along with that.

121

:

So I, it's weird, isn't it?

122

:

So I almost feel like I know

you a little bit in like the

123

:

least stalkerish way possible.

124

:

You're also very honest about the fact

that you do need to put work into this.

125

:

You need to be ready to go all in.

126

:

And I think.

127

:

probably six months ago, I wouldn't

have been ready to do that.

128

:

But I think I'm coming to the

point now where I'm like, this

129

:

is definitely the right time.

130

:

And you've also published some great

case studies as well, which are obviously

131

:

always so good to read, aren't they?

132

:

They really paint a picture of what

it's like to work with someone.

133

:

So, yeah, I think those

are really useful as well.

134

:

Joanna: Yeah, fabulous.

135

:

That's great to hear.

136

:

And in say the next one to two

years, what would be your ultimate

137

:

dream for your coaching business?

138

:

Jess: For me, it's getting qualified.

139

:

That needs to come first.

140

:

Um, my core values is integrity.

141

:

So for me, it was so important to do a

really challenging, a robust qualification

142

:

just to make sure that I felt I would be

giving best possible coaching to someone,

143

:

so definitely finishing qualification.

144

:

In terms of the business, I've

started to niche down, I feel very

145

:

passionate about my niche, my, my

sort of 40 year olds, mid career,

146

:

I just know that they're my people.

147

:

So over the next couple of years, I

think I'm going to grow my business

148

:

As best I can, so with a bit of help

from you, for sure, , and work on that

149

:

client pipeline and putting myself

out there like it's not in my comfort

150

:

zone to be a guest on a podcast, for

example, and talk about myself, but.

151

:

We have to do these things, don't we?

152

:

We have to push ourselves out of our

comfort zones and be a bit more visible.

153

:

And yeah, hopefully we'll

have some, some good rewards.

154

:

Joanna: totally love it.

155

:

And especially the 40 year old thing.

156

:

Like, honestly, my life

genuinely began at 40.

157

:

Did you have any hesitations

about investing in the

158

:

program or a business coach?

159

:

Jess: I think it's always easy to

not spend the money, especially when

160

:

you're starting out because you don't

have a robust pipeline of clients.

161

:

You're not bringing in

thousands of pounds every month.

162

:

I think it would be very easy.

163

:

to not think that the

investment's worth it.

164

:

But for me, I think also,

cause I am quite impatient.

165

:

I want to see the results

as quickly as I can.

166

:

And I, I think this is quite

a recent thing for me, but I

167

:

don't mind asking for help now.

168

:

Like I definitely did in the past,

but I think probably through this

169

:

coaching journey, I've realized

that there's no shame in it.

170

:

We can't do everything ourselves,

just spend the money where it's

171

:

going to benefit you the most.

172

:

And I really think it's going to

be an investment that pays off.

173

:

Joanna: Yeah, I love that.

174

:

And my own money mindset has

massively shifted from when I

175

:

started on this coaching journey.

176

:

Even for example, instead of just paying

the money for my ILM level seven, I

177

:

actually worked doing admin work for an

entire year to pay for that training.

178

:

Whereas now I'm like, what was I thinking

working every night of my life with

179

:

a one and a three year old and three

other jobs rather than just hand over

180

:

the 4, 000 pounds or whatever it was.

181

:

So I really hear you on that money

mindset thing and how it does grow in

182

:

your coaching training and on the journey.

183

:

Jess: Yeah, absolutely.

184

:

And it's, it's crazy, isn't it?

185

:

So often you look back and

you're like, why did I do that?

186

:

But if you can learn from that

and do things differently, then

187

:

yeah, that's a good way to be.

188

:

Joanna: Yeah, totally.

189

:

So anything else you are hoping

to gain from the programme?

190

:

Jess: I think another thing actually

is that it can be very lonely when

191

:

you're setting up your own business.

192

:

So.

193

:

whether you're still in an employed role

or you're sitting out on your own and you

194

:

know, you don't have a team around you.

195

:

I think either way it can be very lonely.

196

:

I'm an introvert and I'm very happy

in my own company a lot of the time.

197

:

But I know I need some sort of

connection, teamwork, feelings like

198

:

belonging to something as well.

199

:

So I think that will be another

bonus of your programme.

200

:

Meeting like minded people.

201

:

Joanna: Yeah, totally.

202

:

I really do see it like coach training.

203

:

And I think often like I really bonded

with my coach training people like

204

:

you have with yours, but then sadly

it kind of drifts away when you leave

205

:

that space and it's so sad because

maybe some people are using it in

206

:

their organization or they might not

all be setting up coaching businesses.

207

:

So it's so exciting that

you're going to maintain those

208

:

relationships, but we'll see.

209

:

Other relationships with people

using those skills in the way that

210

:

you are hoping to use them as well.

211

:

Jess: Yeah, absolutely.

212

:

Joanna: anything else we haven't

covered, Jess, that you wanted to share?

213

:

Jess: I think we've probably touched on

it, but it's interesting being at this

214

:

point of like, I haven't signed up to

your program yet, but I am planning to,

215

:

and it's, it's quite an interesting sort

of moment of decision or indecision.

216

:

Like, should I go for it?

217

:

You know, like I said, it's very easy

to not shell out another few grand for

218

:

another course, but I'm confident I

will see that return on investment and

219

:

I think I'll see it again and again.

220

:

And I think just have a bit

of fun along the way as well.

221

:

You know, like I said, that connection

with people, not only will it produce

222

:

results, I'm confident that I'm actually

really going to enjoy it as well.

223

:

Joanna: Totally, and actually I've got

an in person event this Friday and this

224

:

morning I've been planning that and I've

been looking into the hormones and at

225

:

the top of the hormone cycle we have

oxytocin which is the love hormone,

226

:

the connection, the happiness, the

joy and if you can get enough of that.

227

:

You won't keep going to the cortisol

and obviously, from either of

228

:

those places comes the action you

take and the results that you get.

229

:

So I think the more we can get

that oxytocin, the more it kills

230

:

off the cortisol stress hormone

and the more we will take bigger

231

:

action and get better results.

232

:

So love that.

233

:

Where can people find you, Jess?

234

:

Jess: My business is TwentyTwentyCoaching,

like you've done 20 years of your career.

235

:

What do you want to do

with the next 20 years?

236

:

You can find me at www.

237

:

twentytwentycoaching.co.uk I'd love to

connect with you on LinkedIn as well.

238

:

I am Jess Spires.

239

:

You can search for me

and you'll find me there.

240

:

And yeah, as coaches, we know that

it's a big commitment to sign up

241

:

to coaching with someone, so what I

offer is a 30 minute call initially,

242

:

we'll see if we're a good fit.

243

:

You can find all my contact

details on my website.

244

:

Joanna: Yes, fabulous.

245

:

And I will also link to them in

the show notes as well, Jess.

246

:

And I love the title of your business.

247

:

It's so true.

248

:

Isn't it?

249

:

That you honestly at 40, you kind of feel

like, well, I've just done so many years.

250

:

I must be nearly done.

251

:

And then you realize you've got the

same amount of time still to go.

252

:

Thank you so much, Jess, for your

time and for sharing with people.

253

:

I know it's such a monumental

moment when you're on that cusp.

254

:

And every time I invest in a

program or a coach, I feel that same

255

:

resistance of like, do I need this?

256

:

I should be able to do this on my own.

257

:

So thank you, Jess.

258

:

And I cannot wait to work with you.

259

:

Jess: Thanks so much, Jo.

260

:

I hope you enjoyed listening to

mine and Jess's conversation.

261

:

I was as interested to hear her

responses as hopefully you were.

262

:

I know that so much resistance

can come up when investing.

263

:

So there are five tips that I

would suggest you ask yourself

264

:

when thinking about any big

investment or decision of any sorts.

265

:

The first is can saying yes

to this opportunity, get me

266

:

closer and faster to my goal?.

267

:

The second is if I could make my

financial investment back by two

268

:

to four times over my lifetime,

would it be a smart investment?

269

:

What about 10 X of the investment?

270

:

The third point is

considered the alternative.

271

:

What happens if I don't say yes.

272

:

Will I be in the exact

same situation in one year.

273

:

In five years.

274

:

Will you complain in one

year, would you kick yourself?

275

:

Fourth is consult your intuition.

276

:

The fears are going to be loud.

277

:

We're making any investment.

278

:

I hear them loudly and clearly myself.

279

:

If I could silence my

fear just for a moment.

280

:

What does my gut tell me about what to do.

281

:

It fear weren't real.

282

:

What would you do?

283

:

And my final point, which I talk about the

end of every episode is to trust yourself.

284

:

So faith versus fear.

285

:

If I come from a place of faith,

rather than fear, would I say

286

:

yes to what this opportunity is?

287

:

Let your faith be bigger than your fear.

288

:

So I hope these steps help

you in your decision-making.

289

:

I have been considering a big

decision myself and using these

290

:

five steps to make a decision.

291

:

So I really hope that they help you today.

292

:

If you want to get my personal support,

then now is the time to do that.

293

:

You will find details of the business

of coaching program and how to

294

:

work with me in the show notes.

295

:

So, like I say, at the end of every

episode, trust yourself, believe

296

:

in yourself and be the wise Gardner

who keeps on watering the seeds.

297

:

Joanna Lott

Joanna Lott helps coaches stand out and get clients - with honesty not hype.

She has 20 years’ experience of working within HR and Governance in trade unions and financial services.

After qualifying as an ICF Executive Coach she set about learning everything she could about business, sales and marketing and quickly built a profitable career and executive coaching business around her young family.

Other coaches started asking her how she did it, so she’s supported 35 coaches in the last year alone to help them to build their business and get clients so they can make a living doing work they love.
