Speaker:

Hello and welcome to Women in

the Coaching Arena podcast.

2

:

I'm so glad you are here.

3

:

I'm Jo Lott, a business mentor

and ICF accredited coach

4

:

Microphone (Samson Q2U Microphone):

and I help coaches to

5

:

build brilliant businesses.

6

:

I know that when you prepare to enter

the arena, there is fear, self doubt,

7

:

comparison, anxiety, uncertainty.

8

:

You can tend to armor up and

protect yourself from vulnerability.

9

:

In this podcast, I'll be sharing

honest, not hype, practical and

10

:

emotional tools to support you to make

the difference that you are here for.

11

:

Dare greatly.

12

:

You belong in this arena.

13

:

Hello, welcome to this 68 episode

of women in the coaching arena.

14

:

I am so glad you are here.

15

:

It's a beautiful day here today.

16

:

And it got me thinking about the power

of decisive action, which really is

17

:

the true skill of entrepreneurship.

18

:

And what led me on to thinking about

this is I have my in-person event

19

:

this Friday, which is very exciting.

20

:

So I have 32 amazing

coaches coming for the day.

21

:

And I asked in an email to

them last night, which was

22

:

kind of prepping for the day.

23

:

What would you like to achieve?

24

:

And there was a whole host of

different answers varying from want

25

:

to feel connected to others and

inspiration, happy with anything.

26

:

And there was also lots of tasks, so,

you know, wants to know how to run

27

:

a discovery call, wants to know how

to do a signature coaching program.

28

:

Wants to know how to nail my niche.

29

:

And I think that is really

interesting because yes, that

30

:

is what we all want to know.

31

:

But it's also interesting because

there is so much information out there.

32

:

I have podcast episodes on nearly

everything we need to know.

33

:

So what we need to know

is not always the problem.

34

:

That's the thing that we can easily miss.

35

:

That it's not knowing

what we need to know.

36

:

There are books.

37

:

There is YouTube.

38

:

There is this podcast.

39

:

There are so many things that

help us with what we need to do.

40

:

It's the implementation and also

the courage to actually take action.

41

:

Not knowing if it's the

right decision or not.

42

:

Because for example, niching is just a

decision you can decide that's my niche.

43

:

Yeah.

44

:

So it's not something that you need

to go around in circles over for

45

:

months, even though I know we do.

46

:

And there is no shame in that I

have sure gone round in circles

47

:

on niching many times as well.

48

:

But from this view that I'm having today,

It's about decision-making and that's

49

:

why I wanted to really cover that today.

50

:

That power of making decisive

action, because that is what is

51

:

going to fast track your progress.

52

:

And that is why the people in my

program make much more speedy progress

53

:

than most people, because instead

of staying on their own with that

54

:

problem, they can share it and then

they can move past it way quicker.

55

:

With feedback, with support, with

accountability than they would without

56

:

quickly sharing, making that decision.

57

:

Doing something differently the next day.

58

:

So excited to cover that today

and help you to start taking

59

:

decisive action in your business.

60

:

And on this topic, I also want to share

that it's not just a cognitive thing and I

61

:

think trauma is a real issue in business.

62

:

And it's not your fault.

63

:

There needs to be a lot of deep

personal work that goes on alongside

64

:

building your business because

it's scary to make decisions.

65

:

We've never been brought up to have

a strong opinion, make a decision.

66

:

It's like, play it safe is how most

of us were brought up in school.

67

:

Do what you're told.

68

:

Don't be too loud.

69

:

So it takes a lot of courage.

70

:

And it also takes a lot of

digging deep and embodiment work.

71

:

I worked with someone amazing

called Juliet who helped me to

72

:

see that it's not just mindset.

73

:

It's not just me thinking, oh, I can

just change my mind and be more positive.

74

:

It's trauma stored in the body

preventing you from moving forward until

75

:

you deal with that previous trauma.

76

:

And when I say trauma, I'm talking

about not running in the egg

77

:

and spoon, race or small things.

78

:

It doesn't need to be a huge, big

drama that you've had, but small

79

:

things and how we viewed them at

the time will massively impact us.

80

:

So allow yourself the self-compassion

whether you think people have got it worse

81

:

than me and all of that type of stuff,

because yes, for sure that they have,

82

:

and I really struggled with this also.

83

:

But your body perceives a

threat and stores that threat.

84

:

So it doesn't matter if it's logical and

people are worse off or not worse off.

85

:

It's your perception in that moment?

86

:

Let's get started.

87

:

So Fastly, the paralysis of analysis.

88

:

How many times have you found

yourself stuck in the planning phase?

89

:

Researching, weighing up options,

seeking that perfect moment to act.

90

:

I for sure I've done this a lot.

91

:

And while some preparation is important,

there is a point where you just need

92

:

to do the thing, not knowing if it's

going to work or not in that moment.

93

:

There's rarely a perfect time.

94

:

It's just about trusting that you, as

your CEO of your own business needs to

95

:

make a decision with the knowledge and

the resources you have in that moment.

96

:

And if it fails fine, you fail

fast and you make another decision.

97

:

And I think that is a absolute skill.

98

:

There are some people that I've

worked with super successful people.

99

:

Who are unbelievable at

making quick decisions.

100

:

And again, it's so obvious.

101

:

Why they succeed?

102

:

When they just move forward that

day and I can say something to them.

103

:

One day and it's out there that

afternoon and you're like, oh my gosh.

104

:

If only I could act as

quickly as my amazing clients.

105

:

Whether it succeeds or fails,

they're going to know pretty soon.

106

:

Versus spending three months thinking

about it and then not knowing if it passes

107

:

or fails until three or four months time.

108

:

They're going to know within the

next week, and then they can move

109

:

forward with another decision.

110

:

So it's such a joy and definitely

a trait I notice in my clients.

111

:

Embracing imperfect

action is the next one.

112

:

Progress over perfection every time.

113

:

Start now get perfect.

114

:

Later has been my motto

since day one of my business.

115

:

The only way you get perfect

is to actually start.

116

:

Be really rubbish when you start.

117

:

And continue to practice that skill

again and again, and again, like

118

:

everything we've had to practice in life.

119

:

But as we grow older, we get so in

our comfort zone and we don't want

120

:

to appear not knowledgeable not

confident or any of those things.

121

:

And again, back to the personal

growth work, you have to do

122

:

these things before you're ready.

123

:

Otherwise you are never

going to get ready.

124

:

It's also worth knowing that every

single successful entrepreneur that you

125

:

admire has made a mass of bad decisions.

126

:

That is how they have made really

good decisions because maybe.

127

:

In one bad decision because

they've made it speedily.

128

:

They've made four good

decisions with a time.

129

:

They would have spanked

going round in circles.

130

:

So thirdly, the skill of decisive action.

131

:

Making quick decisions with limited

information, isn't just a necessity.

132

:

It really is a skill that you can develop.

133

:

The more decisions that you make

you become better at quickly

134

:

assessing situations, trusting your

instincts, listening to your gut.

135

:

Dealing with uncertainty, learning

from the outcome, both good and bad.

136

:

Next up is owning your own decisions.

137

:

I had a call this morning with a speaking

coach who I contacted at the last

138

:

minute realizing hosting a large event

requires quite a lot of understanding

139

:

how to facilitate that process.

140

:

He helped me to be able to

say to those in the room on

141

:

Friday, like whose goal is this?

142

:

It's my goal.

143

:

So take full responsibility for your goal.

144

:

And as we continue throughout the day on

Friday, for example, keep checking in.

145

:

Am I getting closer to my goal?

146

:

If not, what do I need to do

within my control right now

147

:

to be able to reach my goal?

148

:

So letting people be the CEO of their own

business, like I am hosting the event.

149

:

But I do not need to

own 32 different goals.

150

:

One person is like wanting to work

on the discovery, calls another.

151

:

Person's wanting to work on this.

152

:

We have a limited amount of time

resources I have the day planned.

153

:

If that is their goal, they're going

to have to figure out what they need to

154

:

do throughout the day in conversations

and also what they may need to do

155

:

after the event to reach that goal.

156

:

So, how can you think about

taking full responsibility for

157

:

the outcomes of your decisions?

158

:

Both positive and negative.

159

:

Learn from every decision, especially

the ones that didn't pan out.

160

:

I just had a message from someone

who had their first bits of kind of

161

:

grief from social media yesterday.

162

:

And she wanted to retreat, obviously,

as you do, when someone questions

163

:

you on social media, but it's

like, how can we learn from that?

164

:

Assess the situation.

165

:

And accept that is my opinion.

166

:

And people are going to have different

views and staying in this middle

167

:

ground all the time is never going

to help you to grow your business.

168

:

It needs to be you.

169

:

It needs to be your thoughts.

170

:

Your emotions, your

stories that you share.

171

:

If someone has a different

view, then that's fine.

172

:

They can scroll on by.

173

:

but you can't make yourself Vanilla

in order to appease one person.

174

:

And then through making these decisions,

you will build that confidence in your

175

:

ability to handle whatever comes your way.

176

:

This is definitely something I

have developed on this journey

177

:

of entrepreneurship, which I

a hundred percent would never

178

:

have been able to do before.

179

:

So it just shows when I make a decision,

I think, well, there's no choice.

180

:

I have to do this now.

181

:

I have to.

182

:

figure this out.

183

:

And you will do the same.

184

:

So trust in your own

resilience and confidence.

185

:

Next I wanted to talk about the

compounding effects of action.

186

:

Every decision you make.

187

:

Every action you take compounds over time.

188

:

It's those small, consistent

actions that build momentum.

189

:

People want to think that

there's one magic pill they

190

:

can take, but it really isn't.

191

:

It's like these small things of

like putting out that post today

192

:

that you really can't be bothered

to put out is adding another

193

:

building block to your business.

194

:

It will create opportunities,

open doors for you, and sometimes

195

:

lead to big breakthroughs that

you would never have imagined.

196

:

Have a think about perhaps that discovery

call that you haven't followed up yet

197

:

could become your biggest success story.

198

:

So what can you do today to build

that compounding effect of action?

199

:

And lastly let's think about

overcoming fear and doubts, because

200

:

I know you are probably thinking

this is really easy to say, but

201

:

what if I make the wrong decision.

202

:

And let me be clear.

203

:

You will definitely make wrong decisions.

204

:

It's not a possibility.

205

:

It is a certainty.

206

:

But here is why it's important

because successful entrepreneurs are

207

:

not those who never make mistakes.

208

:

They're the ones who make

the mistakes the quickest.

209

:

So they move forward and make

the right decision next time.

210

:

Fear of failure is completely normal.

211

:

It paralyzes you and it

paralyzes me often too.

212

:

So again, just know that there

is nothing wrong with you.

213

:

Everyone feels this way.

214

:

It's just about what tiny, tiny

step can you take today to ensure

215

:

that you do not stay stuck?

216

:

And keep remembering that every wrong

decision is an opportunity to learn.

217

:

Adjust.

218

:

Accept, and realize that next

time you have that experience

219

:

now, and you will be able to use

that to make a better decision.

220

:

So here is my challenge to you

today in the next 24 hours.

221

:

Please do make that decision.

222

:

that you have been putting off.

223

:

Launch the program.

224

:

Reach out to the potential

client or previous contact that

225

:

you knew in your workplace.

226

:

Invest in that tool or training you've

been considering whatever it is.

227

:

Take action, and know that you will never

have a guarantee in entrepreneurship.

228

:

So if you are waiting to know that

this is a hundred percent going to work

229

:

for you, then you might as well go get

a job because there is no guarantee.

230

:

And the most exciting part of

entrepreneurship is creating.

231

:

Is building is innovating.

232

:

And not knowing if it's going to work or

not work, but being brave enough to try.

233

:

So having that faith and

trusting yourself enough to know.

234

:

That you are resilient and should

you choose the wrong niche or

235

:

you put the wrong offer out.

236

:

You will learn from that you will grow

and you will do something differently

237

:

next time that you wouldn't do if it

wasn't for taking that decision at that.

238

:

time.

239

:

So in summary, we covered analysis

paralysis, embracing imperfect action.

240

:

the skill of decisive action.

241

:

Owning your decisions,

The compound effect.

242

:

of action and overcoming fear and

doubts and know that you can do this.

243

:

Keep going every successful journey

begins with that first step.

244

:

I love that photo.

245

:

If you haven't seen it before

with these two massive.

246

:

ladders and one has these huge steps

and the other has these tiny, tiny

247

:

steps and who succeeds is the one

that takes that tiny step today.

248

:

So promise me, you will make that

decision in the next 24 hours.

249

:

And I cannot wait to hear from you.

250

:

Drop me a line on LinkedIn as Joanna

Lott or Instagram as @joannalottcoaching.

251

And I cannot wait to see

what decision you make today.

252

:

believe in yourself and be the wise

254

:

Gardner who keeps on watering the seeds.
