Speaker:

Hello and welcome to Women in

the Coaching Arena podcast.

2

:

I'm so glad you are here.

3

:

I'm Jo Lott, a business mentor

and ICF accredited coach

4

:

Microphone (Samson Q2U Microphone):

and I help coaches to

5

:

build brilliant businesses.

6

:

I know that when you prepare to enter

the arena, there is fear, self doubt,

7

:

comparison, anxiety, uncertainty.

8

:

You can tend to armor up and

protect yourself from vulnerability.

9

:

In this podcast, I'll be sharing

honest, not hype, practical and

10

:

emotional tools to support you to make

the difference that you are here for.

11

:

Dare greatly.

12

:

You belong in this arena.

13

:

Hello.

14

:

Welcome to episode 1 1 4 of

Women in the Coaching Arena.

15

:

I am so glad you are here.

16

:

Today I wanted to talk about something

that's been coming up a lot lately,

17

:

and not just in conversation with

clients, but also in the wider world.

18

:

So there is a lot of talk

about the economy, rising

19

:

costs, financial pressures.

20

:

There is worry in the air,

and understandably so.

21

:

We are not officially in a recession,

but the cost of living crisis is

22

:

affecting how people think, how

they spend, how they show up.

23

:

And therefore, if you are a

coach growing your business, it's

24

:

easy to let that worry seep in.

25

:

Maybe you are wondering,

are people still investing?

26

:

Am I being unrealistic for

wanting more clients right now?

27

:

And today I wanted to speak directly

into that space with clarity, calm,

28

:

and encouragement, because I honestly

believe that what you focus on grows,

29

:

and I want to help you to choose

a focus over fear in these times.

30

:

So I thought long and hard about

whether to record this episode because

31

:

in all honesty, I don't let things

like this affect me or my business.

32

:

I.

33

:

Which might seem a little bit

crazy, but I honestly think

34

:

recession is fueled by fear.

35

:

So the more that we talk about it, the

more that it seeps into our world and

36

:

therefore the fear causes people to

stop spending and all of those things.

37

:

And someone said to me recently,

who was in a mastermind with me.

38

:

It's really tough out there right now,

and I felt obliged to agree and said

39

:

yeah, because I guess I felt bad for

him because he was obviously saying

40

:

it's really tough out there right now.

41

:

And in all honesty, I'm not experiencing

this at all in my business right now,

42

:

and he does very similar work to me.

43

:

So it was really interesting how

I allowed myself to get drawn into

44

:

agreeing with something that honestly

isn't a reality for me right now.

45

:

So I want to help you to see that as

well, that just because people are

46

:

talking about this doesn't mean that

you need to jump on the bandwagon and

47

:

agree, because that's how it all starts.

48

:

We all agree, and therefore everyone

starts tightening their belts and

49

:

therefore the recession does kick in.

50

:

So let's start here though,

'cause I'm going off on a tangent

51

:

that people are still investing.

52

:

So the buyer journey might be

slower, it might be more considered.

53

:

But coaching hasn't stopped being needed.

54

:

And in fact, when the world

is unpredictable, that's when

55

:

support, perspective and space to

think becomes even more valuable.

56

:

Think back to Covid.

57

:

The coaching industry absolutely exploded

during Covid, despite the fact that loads

58

:

of people were losing money, worried

about their jobs, all of the things.

59

:

So if you have been feeling stuck thinking

that people aren't buying or it's not the

60

:

right time, let me offer you a reframe.

61

:

It's is not about slashing your prices.

62

:

It's about communicating with

more precision and purpose.

63

:

Ask yourself now,

64

:

do I know exactly who

I'm helping right now?

65

:

Am I speaking to the specific problems

that they're experiencing in this moment?

66

:

Is my offer clearly showing

the result that they want?

67

:

When things feel uncertain, vague

offers don't land, specificity builds

68

:

trust, and trust is what converts.

69

:

So rather than worry and going to a

spin about the cost of living crisis,

70

:

double down on your offer and perhaps

focusing on those who can afford it.

71

:

So it's really worth considering

whether this even affects you.

72

:

Some industries and some people

will be more affected than others.

73

:

Some people out there have

a mass of disposable income.

74

:

I recently attended a workshop and

they said that the baby boomers are the

75

:

people to target right now because they

are the richest people in our economy.

76

:

So maybe it's time to focus your

efforts on baby boomers or people

77

:

who do have more disposable income.

78

:

It doesn't mean changing your niche, it

might just mean refocusing on those who

79

:

are slightly further along in the journey

or have the disposable income to spend.

80

:

Here is where mindset matters,

because like I mentioned earlier, I've

81

:

heard coaches say, no one's buying.

82

:

People just don't have

the money right now.

83

:

And I wholeheartedly disagree

because I like to look for evidence

84

:

that some people are succeeding.

85

:

So if they are gaining clients, there

is absolutely no reason why you can't.

86

:

One of my clients recently

turned down a 300,000 pounds

87

:

contract for leadership coaching.

88

:

It was a three year gig, and she's

turned that down so someone else

89

:

out there will be able to get that

opportunity and they actually sought

90

:

her out and requested a quote from her.

91

:

So it's back to whoever is most visible

will be seen by the people who do

92

:

have the money to invest in coaching.

93

:

So if you let these thoughts

in, they will shape your energy,

94

:

your actions, your visibility.

95

:

So, of course we can't control

the economy, but we can

96

:

choose how to respond to it.

97

:

We don't have to buy

into fear and scarcity.

98

:

We can decide to stay steady, trust our

work, trust ourselves, show up anyway.

99

:

And that's not about ignoring reality.

100

:

It's about choosing what kind

of energy we bring into our

101

:

business and into our lives.

102

:

So let's bring it back into

our own circle of control.

103

:

What we can control is staying visible,

even when responses may be quieter.

104

:

Doubling down on your ideal client

and message, making it really

105

:

clear, resonant and relevant.

106

:

Offering value consistently,

whether that is through content,

107

:

offers or conversations and being

the calm, confident presence that

108

:

your ideal clients are craving.

109

:

People are watching, reading, listening,

and when they are ready, you want

110

:

to be the one they already trust.

111

:

This is your moment to lead, not

from pressure, not from fear,

112

:

but from solid clarity and trust.

113

:

The clients who are a right fit

for your work will appreciate that.

114

:

They are not looking for drama, they're

looking for someone who can help them

115

:

to navigate, change, make the decisions

that they need to make and move forward,

116

:

and that is what you can help them do.

117

:

Don't shrink.

118

:

Don't wait for anything to blow over.

119

:

Keep building, keep showing up.

120

:

Keep choosing to trust the

seeds that you are planting.

121

:

I also want to share that there is

absolutely no shame in associate

122

:

work, getting a part-time job

alongside your business, like

123

:

needs must in your business.

124

:

When I started my business, I had three

jobs on the side of my coaching business

125

:

because I was so nervous to be completely

dependent on myself and my business.

126

:

And.

127

:

Tiny, tiny steps.

128

:

I quit the first job.

129

:

I quit the second job, quit the third

job, and I was really, really scared about

130

:

not feeling like I had a job as such.

131

:

And therefore it took me a long

time to lean into this unstable

132

:

world of entrepreneurship

where there are no guarantees.

133

:

And if you are ever looking

for guarantees, I suggest you

134

:

go and get a job immediately.

135

:

Because ask any business person.

136

:

There are no guarantees.

137

:

You can work hard, we can work

consistently, we can show up, we can

138

:

do all of those things, but in the end,

all we can do is trust ourselves to

139

:

know that we can bring in income some

way or another whenever we need it.

140

:

If I was struggling in my business right

now and had no clients, I would have a

141

:

thousand things that I would choose to

do, whether that's going on someone's

142

:

LinkedIn and connecting with them or

commenting for them on their profile

143

:

. I would do absolutely anything if I

needed to for that income in my business.

144

:

So please, if you are struggling

and if you are needing to gain other

145

:

opportunities while you build your

business, then please know that

146

:

that is completely okay in doing

what you need to do right now for

147

:

your business and for yourself.

148

:

Thank you for joining me today,

and like I say at the end of every

149

:

episode, trust yourself, believe in

yourself, and be the wise gardener

150

:

who keeps on watering the seeds.
