Hello and welcome to Women in
the Coaching Arena podcast.
2
:I'm so glad you are here.
3
:I'm Jo Lott, a business mentor
and ICF accredited coach
4
:Microphone (Samson Q2U Microphone):
and I help coaches to
5
:build brilliant businesses.
6
:I know that when you prepare to enter
the arena, there is fear, self doubt,
7
:comparison, anxiety, uncertainty, shame.
8
:You can tend to armor up and
protect yourself from vulnerability.
9
:In this podcast, I'll be sharing
honest, not hype, practical and
10
:emotional tools to support you to make
the difference that you are here for.
11
:Dare greatly.
12
:You belong in this arena.
13
:Microphone (Samson Q2U Microphone)-1:
Hello, welcome to the 35th episode
14
:of women in the coaching arena.
15
:I am so glad you are here.
16
:Today is going to be a slightly
different episode because I feel like
17
:I am shifting slightly and I want to
share the behind the scenes with you
18
:so you see what a business shift can
look like and feel like, because I
19
:wish I heard more behind the scenes
stuff from other business owners.
20
:So I hope this will be useful for you.
21
:Last week I signed up with a new mentor.
22
:I have been with my previous
business coach for 18 months now.
23
:And so this one just came
out of the blue really?
24
:I wasn't kind of seeking another program.
25
:But you notice, like you get swept up in
the emails and what I really liked about
26
:him, because it's what I value massively.
27
:And I haven't seen out there.
28
:So I think.
29
:We always create what we want.
30
:And what I want is someone to
genuinely care about my success.
31
:And in a personal capacity, as
well as a business capacity.
32
:And for them to be
personally invested in me.
33
:And that connection is something I
seek massively to provide my clients.
34
:So to find someone who I feel
like will be able to do the
35
:same for me, feels so exciting.
36
:We have only had two calls so far.
37
:But I've already implemented loads
of the stuff he's talked about.
38
:And I think that's actually
a really good reflection.
39
:That it's actually quite easy when you
are further along in business for a really
40
:small thing to have a massive impact.
41
:Because you've already done
the hard work of building.
42
:So many of you are in that initial first
two years stage or something when it's
43
:just an uphill battle to build your
audience, to get your clarity, to know
44
:what you're doing in this marketing world.
45
:It really is the hardest part.
46
:And when you're out the other side,
it can get so much easier because
47
:like one small thing he asked me to
do resulted in a really big impact.
48
:Because I've done the hard work.
49
:And he knows that.
50
:It's why a lot of mentors work with
people further, along in their business
51
:journey, because then it's really
easy to get those big results because.
52
:They've already done the hard
graft before you've got to them.
53
:I think what, having a new mentor who
really feels invested in me, and I feel
54
:like we have got so much further to go.
55
:But already things have just opened up
and I see so many more opportunities.
56
:So I'm excited to see what comes of that.
57
:I'm actually going away for
five nights to the French Alps,
58
:depending on when you're listening
to this, I may already be back.
59
:And that is with the mastermind group.
60
:So it's kind of, you get mentoring, but
it's also part of a group program as well.
61
:So it's a bit like how I run my program.
62
:I think there's 10 of us
going to this amazing place.
63
:Um, we are going to be doing
business building and hot seats and
64
:obviously having a good time as well.
65
:So I'm so excited to be able to
hang around with other business
66
:owners in a similar stage to me.
67
:So I think that's going to
be a real pivotal moment.
68
:I've never been on a retreat and
lots of people talk about that
69
:true transformation that can happen
when you're fully away from home
70
:in a completely different country.
71
:So I will keep you posted.
72
:The next exciting change in
my business just this week is
73
:that I incorporated my company.
74
:So far I have been a sole trader.
75
:If you have been debating the
sole trader limited company thing,
76
:I loved being a sole trader.
77
:I really didn't want to incorporate my
company, but at some point, people start
78
:saying, oh, it's more cost-effective.
79
:So I thought the time
was right to do that.
80
:It feels really weird to finally
incorporate my company years on
81
:from establishing my business.
82
:And again, it's just that
new beginning new chapter.
83
:It makes me feel like I have got new
possibilities to build this business on.
84
:I'm the true model for what I always
talk to my clients about, which
85
:is start now get perfect later.
86
:So all of this stuff that many coaches
love doing, which is like incorporate
87
:the company and design the logo and
get the website and do the branding.
88
:It's all stuff I haven't really
prioritized massively until recently.
89
:'cause I'm prioritizing
getting fee paying clients.
90
:Like that's the thing that's going
to grow my business in order to be
91
:at the position of being able to pay
an accountant every single month to
92
:run my books and file my accounts.
93
:I think often these things, earlier on in
the journey, can be a real distraction.
94
:Obviously there is a whole legal debate
about sole trader limited company.
95
:But personally, I absolutely
loved being a sole trader.
96
:So if you are early on in
your journey that's an option.
97
:The next exciting thing that's
been happening in my world is
98
:I trademarked this podcast.
99
:So I've trademarked women
in the coaching arena.
100
:We were driving on our holidays and in my
car, I, went on the government website,
101
:figured out how to do it applied and was
excited to receive my trademark this week.
102
:Lots of coaches talk to me about whether
they should trademark their program name.
103
:Again, it's not really something I
would probably waste my time or money
104
:doing at the early stages, because
two months in, for example, you
105
:might decide to change that program.
106
:So, you know, I have had
this podcast now since March.
107
:So it was kind of like about time,
because the risk is that if somebody
108
:else decides to take the name, I
might have to take my podcast down.
109
:So it's about evaluating that risk.
110
:And if you are fairly early on
in business and you haven't got
111
:anything super established, then
it's probably not such a risk.
112
:I think in business, it needs to be fast.
113
:Messy action.
114
:Otherwise you will get frozen and take no
money generating activity action at all.
115
:So as you can probably tell from every
episode I record, it's all about helping
116
:real paying clients that can help you to
do the work you're here for rather than
117
:getting too stuck in all of the admin.
118
:So whilst yes, in some
circumstances, it's a great idea
119
:to trademark things, weigh up.
120
:What's the risk.
121
:What's the time involved?
122
:What's the money involved.
123
:And is that right for you right now?
124
:The next super exciting thing I have
done is created a coach's planner.
125
:I am so excited about this because it's
something that I need myself to really
126
:plan out what I'm selling each month.
127
:To note down my social media stats so
I can track how they're growing each
128
:month to note down names of people.
129
:I want to keep in touch with, to
note down my niche, my offers,
130
:my strategy to keep me on track
pretty much, because I think most
131
:entrepreneurs are shiny object people.
132
:We love creation and therefore selling
one thing at a time, which is what
133
:I genuinely believe it takes to be
clear in business is a real challenge.
134
:So it's on sale now I will share the link
in the show notes and you can grab the
135
:pDF fillable copy and fill it in online.
136
:If that's your style, you can print out.
137
:Or there is also a copy on
Amazon, so you can actually
138
:order a proper shiny copy too.
139
:I will leave all of those
links in the show notes.
140
:So you can transform your
qualifications into clients and
141
:plan for your best year yet in 2024.
142
:So it feels like a new and exciting time
to be leaving my mark with a registered
143
:company, trademark for my podcast, a
tangible book related to my business
144
:available on, Amazon and electronically.
145
:It's exciting that all of the hard
work and it has been hard work.
146
:Has led to the place that now I feel
like, yes, I have a proper business.
147
:I have a virtual assistant, Jo.
148
:Who's amazing.
149
:I have a social media manager.
150
:Nicole who's amazing.
151
:And it feels so good to be supported.
152
:I would love to have more help because
currently I run all of my own tech stuff.
153
:So all these funnels and emails.
154
:If you're on my email list,
you'll know what I mean.
155
:And they are complex to
do in the background.
156
:So next step will definitely be some sort
of tech VA to take the ins and outs of
157
:the backend of my portal off my hands.
158
:Microphone (Samson Q2U Microphone)-5:
But saying that the benefits to you
159
:of learning how to do these things.
160
:And for me of learning how to do these
things is that you really understand?
161
:And then it feels less scary.
162
:And, you know, if you hire someone,
roughly how much work there is to do for
163
:the amount, they might be quoting you.
164
:So, it's such an amazing learning
journey having a business, before you
165
:get ready to really effectively delegate.
166
:Now I would love to reflect on the journey
that has brought me to where I am today.
167
:And that includes the ups and
the downs and the changes.
168
:And I had a really great coaching
session just now about how attached
169
:we can get to what we have created and
what we've done so far in our business.
170
:Even if what we are attracting is
not what we thought we would be
171
:doing in our coaching business.
172
:I started off doing executive coaching.
173
:At that time I'd left an organization that
I wasn't happy in its very controlling.
174
:So I think after many, many years
within that organization, adjusting
175
:who I was meant to be, what was
meant to say how I could keep in
176
:the good books, essentially at all
times with all people was exhausting.
177
:So when I started coaching
within organizations.
178
:I found it really stifling.
179
:To hear, I guess, where I had
been reflected back at me.
180
:So feeling like they had no control
and they had to stay at this
181
:organization because the holiday
was good and the pension was good.
182
:And I was just like, thinking, gosh, C'mon
there's a whole world out there because I
183
:had discovered this whole world out there.
184
:All I'm saying is it
just didn't bring me joy.
185
:It wasn't what I wanted to
hear about when I was into
186
:this world of entrepreneurship.
187
:Loving the fact I can do anything I want.
188
:I can create anything I want.
189
:There is no ceiling.
190
:So I soon realized executive coaching
was not really what I wanted to do.
191
:Which led me to career coaching, because
then what I obviously loved is helping
192
:people leave those jobs that they
hated and get into work that they love.
193
:And I absolutely love career coaching.
194
:It was a super hard
decision when eventually.
195
:I moved into business coaching.
196
:Because if someone's literally going for
an interview that next week, or you can
197
:do their CV and have such a massive impact
on them in such a short period of time.
198
:So I really adored career change.
199
:Obviously, sometimes it was way slower if
people were actually completely changing
200
:career thinking about what they want next.
201
:Sometimes it was years before
that actually happened.
202
:Then it's a bit more like just loving
watching that discovery and the journey.
203
:Because I was very visible and I did
lots of talks and run career training
204
:and organizations, and did lots
of ones, one with an organizations
205
:on career stuff specifically other
coaches started asking me for my help.
206
:So that is how two years ago
now, I started my business
207
:coaching program on the side.
208
:So I had my career business as well.
209
:And like I say to anyone that
works with me on this podcast all
210
:the time, it's really difficult
to do two things really well.
211
:So at some point you
probably will want to choose.
212
:So you are running one business
with one ideal client, one offer,
213
:and one message rather than
completely frozen into what to post.
214
:So I think I posted nothing for four
months because I was in this quandary
215
:that many of you find yourself in.
216
:I have not really knowing who
I was talking to, what business
217
:I was trying to attract.
218
:And that is why it can be so
helpful to choose one ideal client.
219
:And then you will never,
ever run out content.
220
:Because when you know, your ideal client
inside out content is just everywhere.
221
:So I took that brave decision
eventually to go all in on
222
:my business coaching venture.
223
:And I've absolutely loved every moment.
224
:I think many of us are trying to
provide the solution that we want.
225
:And so it's a real joy to see
people go on that journey, see their
226
:confidence, grow massively and see
them charge for coaching, raised their
227
:prices, massively all of the things
that can come from having a really
228
:good mentor client relationship.
229
:So wherever you are on your journey
right now know that it's not wasted.
230
:Those two years I spent in the career
and executive space have really helped me
231
:massively in my business now reflecting
because I have my own learnings to share.
232
:And also, I talk a lot to my
clients about behind closed doors,
233
:you can do all sorts of things.
234
:Like for example, I have
three of my clients currently.
235
:Doing a project for me running
workshops and doing one-on-one coaching.
236
:So it doesn't mean that you have to say no
to any work that is outside of your niche.
237
:It just means in your marketing that
you are super clear, super specific.
238
:I would love to hear your
story, your milestones.
239
:What has been your
biggest learning so far?
240
:Please do drop me a message
on linked in and let me know.
241
:So with that I will do a quick recap
on what I covered in this episode.
242
:So how important a new mentor can be?
243
:And what shifts it can
really open up for you.
244
:And I'm excited to share more about my
journey as I continue this relationship.
245
:Then I talked about the fact
my company is now incorporated.
246
:So I'm getting official.
247
:I have trademarked the podcast again,
another little tick in the official box.
248
:I have created a coach's planner.
249
:You can either buy the downloadable
PDF fillable copy, or you can go on
250
:Amazon and buy yourself a hard copy.
251
:I will put links in the show notes.
252
:It's called the coaches planner.
253
:So thank you for being part
of my business journey.
254
:It's going to get a whole lot
more exciting because I have
255
:run my main flagship program.
256
:The business of coaching
for over two years now.
257
:And so I'm excited to think
about my next offering.
258
:And so watch this space.
259
:And like I say, at the end of every
episode, trust yourself, believe
260
:in yourself and be the wise Gardner
who keeps on watering the seed.
261
:Microphone (Samson Q2U Microphone):
Thank you so much for listening to this
262
:episode of Women in the Coaching Arena.
263
:I have a mess of free resources on
my website joannalottcoaching.com.
264
:That's Joanna with an A
and Lott with two T's.
265
:joannalottcoaching.com.
266
:And I'll also put links in the show notes.
267
:Let me know if you found
this episode useful.
268
:Share it with a friend and
leave me a review, and I will
269
:personally thank you for that.
270
:Remember to trust yourself, believe
in yourself and be the wise Gardner
271
:who keeps on watering the seed.
272
:Get into the arena dare, greatly and try.
