Speaker A:

You can tend to armour up and protect yourself from vulnerability.

Speaker A:

In this podcast I'll be sharing honest, not hype, practical and emotional tools to.

Speaker B:

Support you to make the difference that.

Speaker A:

You'Re here for dare greatly you belong in this arena.

Speaker B:

Hello, welcome to episode 109 of Women in the Coaching Arena.

Speaker B:

I am so glad you are here.

Speaker B:

I'm delighted to share a case study conversation with the wonderful Merve Hockamp.

Speaker B:

Merve has worked with me in two.

Speaker C:

Of my programs so far and is.

Speaker B:

An absolute joy because she brings so much enthusiasm.

Speaker B:

She actively implements tries new things.

Speaker B:

So I'm delighted to share her story with you on how she built her coaching business after leaving her previous employment.

Speaker C:

At Google and literally building it from the ground up.

Speaker B:

I hope you enjoy this conversation.

Speaker D:

Hi Merve, thank you so much for agreeing to reflect on your journey with me.

Speaker D:

It was an absolute journey joy to.

Speaker C:

Work with you in two of my programs so far.

Speaker C:

So I cannot wait to hear because usually these conversations I hear more than I've ever heard before about amazing wins and all the things that have happened.

Speaker D:

So please do share a bit about.

Speaker C:

You and what you do.

Speaker E:

Yeah Hi Joan, thank you so much for having me.

Speaker E:

I'm really excited to be here.

Speaker E:

About Me Marbe is my name.

Speaker E:

I'm originally from Istanbul, Turkey but have.

Speaker F:

Lived all around the world pretty much.

Speaker F:

But now I'm based in Dublin, Ireland.

Speaker E:

I have about 11 years of a corporate career in tech.

Speaker F:

I was at Google and before that I was in management consulting which is where I started my career and I.

Speaker E:

Now run my own coaching business.

Speaker E:

So I have left my tech job.

Speaker F:

To start my executive and business coaching business Lead Rise coaching.

Speaker E:

I have leaders grow their businesses, build high performing teams and advance their careers.

Speaker D:

I'm trying to think back now as.

Speaker C:

To exactly when you joined the program.

Speaker C:

I know you did offer to market first.

Speaker C:

Thinking back to probably 12 months ish.

Speaker D:

Maybe a bit longer or so ago.

Speaker C:

Can you remember when that was and what was going on for you at the time?

Speaker E:

Yeah, I mean I was following you for a while before I decided to.

Speaker F:

Join first offer to market at Veep Said and then I fell in love with it, the process and your offering and I joined business as coaching right.

Speaker E:

After that before I Decided to join, offer to market.

Speaker F:

I think I was maybe the last.

Speaker E:

Person to join at midnight, right before the program kicked off, I thought really naive and really frustrated because I thought, look, I have leadership experience myself.

Speaker F:

Currently, I help leaders.

Speaker E:

I have studied business.

Speaker F:

I have an mba.

Speaker E:

I was on the business side of.

Speaker F:

The tech world that I was in.

Speaker E:

So I have the experience, I have the theory, I have the education.

Speaker E:

I was a consultant before, so I've got that as well.

Speaker E:

And then of course, I had my ICF accreditation and everything.

Speaker E:

So the coaching, I have it covered now.

Speaker E:

I make the cake, I have all the ingredients, I'm going to go for it and it's going to work and it's going to be great.

Speaker E:

Why wouldn't I get all the clients.

Speaker F:

Wow them, have these amazing streamlined processes.

Speaker E:

Make a lot of money and have great impact in the world, right?

Speaker E:

Turns out that's not how it works, and that's what your program gave me.

Speaker E:

You need to understand how business of coaching works as a process and what results you're after and what the people who can support you are do.

Speaker E:

You need the structure of the framework and you also need community.

Speaker E:

You also need somebody who's an expert, who can handhold you sometimes, but also, even though you're the one who's doing it yourself, who can champion you, who.

Speaker F:

Can support you, who can cheer you on.

Speaker E:

So I think before I joined the program, I was oblivious a little bit.

Speaker E:

And in terms of the reality of it, I did have clients, I did.

Speaker F:

Have my business set up.

Speaker E:

I did have some processes, which, looking back, I don't know if I want to call them processes compared to what I have now.

Speaker E:

But I did set it up and I was very much feeling like a person who had friends.

Speaker E:

My friend's friends were my clients.

Speaker F:

I had maybe five or six clients at the time when I joined.

Speaker F:

I know you'll ask the question.

Speaker F:

I'm sure it looks different now.

Speaker C:

That's such a joy to hear because I think there's so much resistance, especially if people have a marketing background or a specific business background or do business coaching themselves, then it's easy to think that you don't need that support because you know all the stuff.

Speaker C:

So it's really powerful to hear that because it's just hard to do it for yourself, isn't it?

Speaker E:

A hundred percent.

Speaker E:

And also there's too much to do, not enough time.

Speaker E:

So you need to think about, okay, what do I do today and what do I not do today and what's the next step after to do today, you're kind of walking in the dark and you need maybe a flashlight so that you can see the end of the tunnel.

Speaker C:

Yeah, I hear you.

Speaker D:

So you joined the program, which is amazing.

Speaker C:

Tell me what was most helpful for you from the program?

Speaker E:

Lots of things.

Speaker E:

One, I would say the frameworks.

Speaker E:

It was so valuable for me to understand the step by step process, to know that it's validated and proven.

Speaker E:

And I followed your step by step process process, which I really appreciated.

Speaker E:

Also.

Speaker E:

With that process, I wasn't asking myself.

Speaker F:

All these questions of am I doing the right thing?

Speaker E:

I just trusted it.

Speaker E:

That was really, really valuable.

Speaker E:

I think also, you don't know what you don't know.

Speaker E:

Since your program, I've been on lots of podcasts and that started with one of our calls.

Speaker F:

I remember when we were talking about.

Speaker E:

Exponential growth and I think you mentioned, oh, podcasts.

Speaker E:

And I was like, oh, well that's interesting.

Speaker E:

I listen to podcasts.

Speaker E:

I could be on podcasts.

Speaker E:

How do I even go about it?

Speaker E:

It just never had occurred to me before.

Speaker E:

Similarly with my social media marketing, I was doing it before too, but I didn't realize how often or what are some compelling posts.

Speaker E:

When it was told to me or we workshopped it together, I understood it immediately, but it just wasn't something I.

Speaker F:

Had thought about before.

Speaker E:

There's a lot of unknown unknowns and the program helped shed a light on those.

Speaker E:

So the process and the wisdom.

Speaker E:

Secondly, of course, the community.

Speaker E:

Because, you know, like, I'm an extroverted person.

Speaker F:

I'm sure that's going to come as.

Speaker E:

A surprise to you.

Speaker E:

I don't do much talking in your.

Speaker F:

Program, but I'm an extroverted person.

Speaker E:

So I think when I was at Google, for example, it's a huge company, right?

Speaker E:

We had about 10,000 people in Dublin at the moment.

Speaker F:

In the office, I worked with global.

Speaker E:

Teams, so I was always around people, particularly as an extroverted person.

Speaker E:

But in general too, of course, it's good to sound check certain things and brainstorm together.

Speaker E:

And I think that's been really valuable.

Speaker F:

Because a business owner, a solopreneur, it.

Speaker E:

Can get lonely sometimes.

Speaker E:

I think that support is really valuable.

Speaker F:

And then the ideation was really valuable.

Speaker E:

And thirdly, I hope this doesn't sound very sappy, but I think you was the.

Speaker E:

You're an inspiration.

Speaker E:

I think you don't just talk the talk, but you walk the talk.

Speaker E:

You are very tech savvy, for example.

Speaker E:

That's super inspirational.

Speaker E:

I remember one of the calls you were like, oh.

Speaker E:

So I just discovered that there's this function that when you're doing your own work, because we would have these 5 minute, 10 minute, like, okay, now that.

Speaker F:

We have the exercise, like, go and jot down your notes, type of like, let's all be quiet, do our thing.

Speaker E:

And then come back and debrief in your program.

Speaker E:

And you're like, okay, well, we have this new feature on Zoom that I can now play music while you're doing that for inspiration.

Speaker E:

And you played music.

Speaker E:

And I was like, oh, that's cool.

Speaker E:

So how do I do that for my Zoom participants, for my group calls, for my coaches?

Speaker E:

Is it a huge thing that you can play music on Zoom?

Speaker E:

No, but I think of every call that we have.

Speaker F:

And also you're also very involved outside of the calls.

Speaker E:

There's something that you're learning, there's something that you're.

Speaker E:

You're doing that is making you grow, that you share with us.

Speaker F:

Now, I know we do LinkedIn, for example.

Speaker F:

You're doing a LinkedIn accelerator.

Speaker E:

So we're kind of joining your journey because you want to share and we're learning from you and getting inspired by what you're doing.

Speaker E:

That, to me is really important.

Speaker E:

I didn't want a mentor who would just tell me what to do, but who would also show me and inspire me.

Speaker F:

And I think I found that you.

Speaker D:

Oh, that's so amazing.

Speaker D:

I love it.

Speaker C:

When I reflect back on programs I've been in, I've actually learned more from watching the person run the program and the back end and the, the contract I receive or like, all of the stuff, like, really inspires you and helps you think about how you can apply that to your business as well.

Speaker C:

So thank you.

Speaker C:

That's the best thing I think anyone's ever said to me because it's exactly what I want to do.

Speaker E:

Oh, it's so true.

Speaker E:

Also, the support that you give, you have the support from the program and the unity of, like, we're all in.

Speaker F:

This together type of camaraderie.

Speaker E:

Other programs are courses have the teacher, the trainer, the facilitator, and they're there for you, but they're not there for you individually.

Speaker E:

They're there for you as a group.

Speaker E:

And you might be lucky to ask your question and get it answered on the call.

Speaker E:

Whereas for you, you hold space for the group, but you're also available for us individually.

Speaker E:

I know that there have been times when I had my first client who I got from Google, I messaged immediately, and I think maybe it was A Friday evening.

Speaker F:

I was like, joe, no rush.

Speaker E:

But I just had to tell you that this happened, that somebody came to me.

Speaker E:

I'm not just a person who has friends.

Speaker E:

Like, no, I'm a real business.

Speaker E:

There are people who are random and coming to me.

Speaker E:

You celebrated it with me and then you told me, okay, so now that you have that, you can do this other thing.

Speaker E:

And I'm so excited about this other thing.

Speaker E:

And then I sent you another voice message about what I had planned.

Speaker E:

I think you're there for us to celebrate our wins, but also you're thinking.

Speaker F:

With us individually and sharing your own experience.

Speaker E:

You're also experimenting and trying things yourself, learning for us.

Speaker E:

Just it's that Brene Brown Brown thing, right?

Speaker E:

You're yourself vulnerable or you're yourself pushing your own limits.

Speaker F:

And so that in itself is very inspirational and extremely supportive.

Speaker C:

Effy, thank goodness me, I feel like.

Speaker D:

Crying, especially with the Brene Brown reference.

Speaker C:

Because obviously that's the podcast inspiration name.

Speaker C:

So thank you so, so much, Merve.

Speaker C:

It means a lot to me.

Speaker D:

And if we're now thinking 12 months.

Speaker C:

Or so on from when we first met, what does life look like now?

Speaker E:

I feel like I've come a long.

Speaker F:

Way from being a solopreneur to now.

Speaker E:

I feel like a CEO.

Speaker F:

I can proudly and vulnerably say I.

Speaker E:

Have a streamlined business.

Speaker F:

One of the goals that I had set for myself was that my business was going to be making money and generating leads while I sleep.

Speaker E:

That was really important to me and right now that is happening now I.

Speaker F:

Have plans to really grow that and streamline that for the future.

Speaker F:

But right now I get my lead for new clients for my group programs and from my one to one coaching.

Speaker F:

I also have corporates reaching out to me.

Speaker E:

So that's really valuable to me.

Speaker F:

I feel very proud to have done.

Speaker E:

That and I think that took lots of effort, lots of energy and also lots of systems and lots of maybe self belief which you helped me a lot with because I didn't always believe in myself.

Speaker E:

But I think just showing up consistently.

Speaker F:

Has really paid off.

Speaker F:

Now in terms of numbers which I am dated and numbered here than come from a Google background.

Speaker E:

I have 20 give or take regular clients right now.

Speaker F:

I have worked that I did my year end reflection last year and I have 2.5x my revenue for my business and it's a year before I feel like I have systems right now and.

Speaker E:

I have simplified my offering.

Speaker F:

I think that was one of the things that you helped me with at the beginning because I was like okay.

Speaker E:

Here are the 17 things that I'm doing.

Speaker E:

What should I do, Joe?

Speaker E:

And you're like okay, first of all just take a chill pill and do one and do it really well and.

Speaker F:

Then we can go from there.

Speaker E:

So I think now I have my.

Speaker F:

One to one coaching.

Speaker F:

I have a group coaching program called Momentum, that's for leaders and then I also offer workshops for corporates and also for individuals.

Speaker E:

So those are my three things that I do.

Speaker F:

And I have systems around them that.

Speaker E:

I have fine tuned so I feel a lot more confident.

Speaker E:

I have a lot more ownership and.

Speaker F:

Control and systems operational efficiency.

Speaker C:

Love it.

Speaker C:

And I actually don't know the answer to this question so I'm really interested to ask it because I know you have young children like younger than mine.

Speaker C:

I would love to know our wise and freedom wise what does your working.

Speaker B:

Week generally look like?

Speaker E:

I don't know if you like the answer to this.

Speaker E:

I do love what I have.

Speaker E:

I can always do better but I actually work a lot.

Speaker F:

However, I have some non negotiables.

Speaker E:

For instance on Wednesdays after 2 I am with my daughter.

Speaker E:

That's a half day for me.

Speaker E:

I pick her up from school, I.

Speaker F:

Bring her to our activities, we have her, you know, mom and daughter, lunch or chat hours.

Speaker E:

She's seven and so that's something that I always keep and I don't care.

Speaker F:

How much demand there is or how much I have to do, that's just there and that's really important to me.

Speaker F:

I'm always done at a certain hour every day so that I can spend time with my kids before they go to bed and that's like a good two to three hours and I'm there with them present.

Speaker E:

Some evenings I work.

Speaker E:

I also work with a global client base and I'm based in Dublin, Ireland's time zone.

Speaker F:

Sometimes it's good that I have evening hours for my UF clients and some days I start earlier for my APAC clients.

Speaker E:

I flex around but I also have.

Speaker F:

My own non negotiables that you know.

Speaker E:

Certain evenings, on Tuesday evenings for example.

Speaker F:

I go for my swimming and again I don't care that you know, my husband earlier this week for example was traveling but then I asked a friend to come and watch the kids while they're sleeping so that I can go to my swimming.

Speaker E:

So I make sure that I have.

Speaker F:

My yoga swimming in my time with.

Speaker E:

My kids in But I do not.

Speaker F:

Really keep a strict I guess like.

Speaker E:

I only work during the day or I don't work Weekends type of thing.

Speaker E:

So I have infinite flexibility and freedom.

Speaker D:

Oh, interesting to be honest.

Speaker E:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

No, please don't feel bad.

Speaker D:

I think it's good for people to.

Speaker C:

Know the honest truth, that it takes.

Speaker D:

A lot of work when you first.

Speaker C:

Start, especially like eventually it will become less.

Speaker C:

But it's really important and I don't ever want to attract the type of client who is out there going, oh.

Speaker D:

I can just do two hours a.

Speaker C:

Week and generate a sustainable long term, great salary from a coaching business.

Speaker C:

It's not going to work.

Speaker C:

I don't want you as a client.

Speaker C:

You need to be committed and you need to put the work in.

Speaker C:

So thank you for sharing it.

Speaker E:

That's it.

Speaker E:

I mean, you got to be realistic.

Speaker F:

And maybe we'll talk about it when.

Speaker E:

We talk about my plans for the future.

Speaker E:

But I do want to systemize a bit more to cut the overhead so that I can be more efficient so.

Speaker F:

That I can actually spend my time doing more strategic stuff as opposed to rescheduling appointments and sending contracts to my coaches.

Speaker F:

I really want to systemize that and.

Speaker E:

I want my systems to just run that.

Speaker E:

I want to use more AI.

Speaker E:

Of course, that's a big thing in.

Speaker F:

This day and age, isn't it?

Speaker E:

So that I can reduce the time spent on operational overhead and spend more.

Speaker F:

Time thinking about my business, business developing.

Speaker E:

Strategizing and my vision.

Speaker E:

That's always something that I will continue to tweak and better as we go.

Speaker E:

But initially, you know, so a lot you don't know that you don't know and a lot that you can't delegate to AI or another human before you actually understand what it takes.

Speaker E:

I don't want a coaching platform to take over my onboarding because I don't know what works in my onboarding.

Speaker E:

So I use a lot of platforms.

Speaker F:

In a lot of tech, but maybe.

Speaker E:

They'Re a little bit more piecemeal right now.

Speaker E:

w I have system first, so now:

Speaker F:

On to systemize that and get my.

Speaker E:

Agentic AI to take over so that.

Speaker F:

I can save time and put that time into other things.

Speaker E:

But it does take a while to get to a point where you can eliminate, delegate, automate this kind of work.

Speaker F:

So that you can spend less time on things and make more money.

Speaker C:

Love it.

Speaker D:

And what would you say is your.

Speaker C:

Biggest takeaway from the program?

Speaker E:

Oh, there are so many.

Speaker E:

Maybe this is too high level, but that being vulnerable and again that maybe.

Speaker F:

Goes to the Brene Brown and experimentation.

Speaker E:

And being open to new things and that's just really important.

Speaker E:

It does take time and energy.

Speaker E:

You need people around you, you need.

Speaker F:

Resources around you, but you will do it.

Speaker E:

It's possible.

Speaker E:

You just need to start somewhere, get.

Speaker F:

The right people around you, get the right support, get the right resources and then you're off to the races.

Speaker F:

It's going to work out for you.

Speaker E:

I think the biggest thing that I.

Speaker F:

Got then is the process and the confidence to make it happen.

Speaker C:

Love it.

Speaker D:

Thank you so much.

Speaker D:

Merve, tell me more as to what's next for you.

Speaker E:

I think scale is my big thing.

Speaker E:

So I have two things for:

Speaker E:

Spaciousness is one, which I know that we have.

Speaker F:

I've mentioned that to you before.

Speaker E:

So I want to feel a bit more spacious and that means I have.

Speaker F:

To create space system or optimize my.

Speaker E:

Systems so I can cut the switching.

Speaker F:

Cost of all the things I'm doing and have more blocks of time where I'm strategizing, visioning and creating new things.

Speaker F:

I think that's my big thing.

Speaker E:

Specifically and concretely, I'm now doing planning.

Speaker F:

At the beginning of the year.

Speaker F:

I have four workshops, so one spot.

Speaker E:

Per quarter that are open to public.

Speaker F:

My next one that's coming up is going to be on productivity and managing your energy and time.

Speaker E:

More corporate engagements this year that I am planning.

Speaker F:

So lots of training, lots of workshops that I'm really, really excited about and some partnerships also in that department.

Speaker E:

I'm getting my LEGO Serious Play facilitator certification now so that I can, I can offer that to corporates.

Speaker F:

So I'm really excited about that because.

Speaker E:

I'm big on, you know, playful and grounded leadership through hands on experiencing as well.

Speaker E:

So lots of corporate work and I think just continuing on with my one.

Speaker F:

To one work with my clients too.

Speaker E:

Because I really, really enjoy that because.

Speaker F:

There'S something very special that you get from that individual relationship that is perfect, personalized.

Speaker C:

I haven't heard of Lego play.

Speaker D:

Is that a qualification or tell me more.

Speaker E:

It's a qualification.

Speaker E:

So it's, it is from Lego, like LEGO from Denmark.

Speaker E:

And the idea, I mean the overarching.

Speaker F:

Idea is that, you know, you never stop to.

Speaker E:

Or maybe it's a should.

Speaker E:

You never should stop to be a kid.

Speaker E:

Remember when we're kids and we used.

Speaker F:

To play with our Legos and kind of lose track of time and you know, Legos are really good because it.

Speaker E:

Will inspire creativity but at the same time you're building Something So it's very.

Speaker F:

Hands on and involved.

Speaker F:

It needs to be robust, but it.

Speaker E:

Needs to be flexible because there's pieces.

Speaker F:

So there's a lot that goes into it.

Speaker E:

And then if you're doing it with other people, of course, then like teamwork.

Speaker F:

And collaboration and then soft skills around.

Speaker E:

How do you communicate, how do you.

Speaker F:

Focus on the process, results and people.

Speaker E:

So that qualification and certification for trainers.

Speaker F:

And then I can offer it to.

Speaker E:

Corporate leadership teams where they come together.

Speaker F:

And there's different simulations in different cases and scenarios that you put them in and then they have to communicate, create and build.

Speaker C:

God, that sounds so exciting.

Speaker D:

Thank you for sharing.

Speaker E:

From the receiving end too.

Speaker E:

I love it because you get to.

Speaker F:

Put yourself in a situation where you maybe discover yourself a little bit and your own skill sets and your shortcomings as well as your strength in the team environment.

Speaker C:

Yeah, love it.

Speaker D:

And finally, would you recommend the program.

Speaker C:

And if so, who too?

Speaker E:

I recommend your program a hundred percent.

Speaker F:

Of course I do.

Speaker E:

It's been a game changer for me and I recommend it to everybody who.

Speaker F:

Is at the beginning of their journey.

Speaker E:

But also people who are later on in their journey.

Speaker F:

Because you really need the support of an expert expert.

Speaker F:

You need the inspiration and you need accountability from other people to succeed in business.

Speaker F:

Just coming from my personal experience, I speak to a lot of people who are saying like, well, you don't really need that.

Speaker E:

Or they might be in a position.

Speaker F:

That they have certain experiences or qualifications.

Speaker E:

That they feel will be, will be sufficient, which they're good enough, but they're just not enough.

Speaker E:

And I think doing your program has.

Speaker F:

Really accelerated my progress.

Speaker E:

I think I would have been here.

Speaker F:

Maybe without your program, but in like 10 years as opposed to in a year.

Speaker E:

So I think that people should focus.

Speaker F:

On that return, on investment and that's investment in time as well as investment of energy and heart.

Speaker D:

And if you were going to give.

Speaker C:

Some advice to your former self, perhaps if there's someone listening, that's earlier in their journey, a year back, perhaps from where you are now, what advice would you give them?

Speaker E:

I would say trust the process, be yourself and show up for yourself.

Speaker E:

That's my ABC that I talk to my coaches about authenticity.

Speaker F:

So you have to be authentically yourself.

Speaker E:

Don't do something that's fake.

Speaker F:

There are these coaches on social media that might say, work for two hours.

Speaker E:

And make your seven figures tomorrow.

Speaker E:

I don't even know if that's possible, but I find that that's not me.

Speaker F:

You have to be authentically yourself.

Speaker F:

And do what's authentically organic for you.

Speaker E:

My B is belief.

Speaker E:

Believe in yourself, trust the process C.

Speaker F:

Is really important, the consistency right?

Speaker F:

You have to keep showing up even.

Speaker E:

If you have one like on your LinkedIn post, you have to show up again the next day.

Speaker E:

The next day surely enough then you.

Speaker F:

Get like a thousand likes because you just showed up.

Speaker E:

It's that compounding effect.

Speaker F:

So that's what I would say to people who are just starting out.

Speaker D:

Thank you so much Merve.

Speaker D:

You were an absolute joy to work.

Speaker C:

With and so glad that we are.

Speaker D:

Keeping in touch with my LinkedIn goal and co coaching and sharing all of.

Speaker C:

That journey as well.

Speaker E:

Thank you so much for this opportunity.

Speaker F:

It's been a lovely conversation and it.

Speaker E:

Has also given me the opportunity to reflect.

Speaker F:

Thank you.

Speaker D:

You are so welcome.

Speaker D:

Thank you Merve.

Speaker B:

I hope you enjoyed reflecting on Merve's journey.

Speaker B:

I love her final point with the ABC a authentically yourself b belief in yourself and c consistency.

Speaker B:

They are wonderful ingredients for a successful coaching business.

Speaker B:

If you would like my help, as Merve did in implementing all of the things, then do get in touch.

Speaker B:

You will find the details to the Business of Coaching program in the show Notes and I have consistently filled the program every month for many many years, but given Easter's timings I am probably not going to be having an intake until the 6th of May and I only take on five people per month.

Speaker B:

So do get in soon if you know you want to focus and get support in your business just as Merve did.

Speaker B:

Have a wonderful day and like I always say, trust yourself, believe in yourself and be the wise gardener who keeps on watering the seed.
